Peregrine Falcons in Aylesbury – Part 5

First picture of the chicks! Woohoo!

Sorry for the excitement there but ever since the chicks hatched at the beginning of the month I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to get a sight of them! This has not been easy to do as the chicks have normally stayed at the back of the box whilst 200 feet up and short of hiring a crane, getting level with them ain’t easy!

So after watching them on the webcam very regularly and finding out that they are now walking around the nest (only in the shade though, not when the sun is on them!) I found myself out in the town on a Friday evening with full kit after 8pm!

With the weather continuing to be good and the sun shining strongly I couldn’t resist getting down early to spend a couple of hours with the Peregrines. The plan today was to try a couple of different angles to see if the chicks would have a nose over the edge and whilst that was not to be, there were some other opportunities instead!

The following 5 images, which are also in the Peregrine Falcon Gallery page show one of the parents out hunting, both on the nesting box, one landing on a different part of the roof, one in flight away from the nest and one with an extra foot in it!

Peregrine Falcons in Aylesbury – Part 3

It’s been a while since I’ve managed to get out with the camera so with the sunshine out this morning I decided to catch up with the local Peregrines. The good news since my last post is that 2 of the 3 eggs have hatched and the chicks are now around 2 weeks old and are doing very well.

This morning I was lucky enough to catch one of the parents bringing in breakfast in the shape of what looks like the left overs of a pigeon and have added the images to the Peregrine Gallery page here.

For those of you who don’t know there is a live feed of the nest on the AVDC website here so you can see how they are getting on from anywhere in the world! Another useful site is the Bucks Bird Club site where they have a dedicated Peregrine page showing images from the cameras right back to March so you can catch up on the story so far.

There will be a one day Peregrine Watch setup by BBOWT and AVDC tomorrow (Thursday 17th May) where there will be telescopes set up in Market Square so you can have a look for yourself. If you get there early enough do pop over and say hi as I will be there til around 11.30!
